Translate a Markdown file

Drop a .md file. The prose is translated; headings, lists, links and code blocks keep their Markdown.

Markdown is how a lot of documentation, README files, knowledge bases and notes are written. A general translator treats the # signs, asterisks and link brackets as text and often breaks them, and it will happily translate your code samples. DropTranslate parses the Markdown first, translates the readable text and writes the markup back, so headings are still headings, links still point to the same URLs and code stays code. The result can go straight back into your docs folder or static site.

How it works

Drop the .md

We count the words of prose (not code) and show the credit cost.

Pick the language

Choose the target language for your docs.

Download the .md

Commit it next to the original, for example as README.es.md.

What changes, what stays

Translated

  • Headings, paragraphs, lists, block quotes and table text
  • The visible text of links

Kept as-is

  • Markdown syntax: #, *, -, >, tables and emphasis markers
  • Link and image URLs
  • Code blocks and inline code

Layout: Exact: markup kept

The Markdown structure is rebuilt as it was, with the translated text in place, so it renders the same way.

  • Front matter at the top of the file (between --- lines) is metadata used by site generators. Check which fields you want translated, such as a title, and which must stay, such as a slug.
  • Raw HTML inside Markdown is kept; for HTML pages, use the HTML translator.

Tips

  • Anchor links to headings (#installation) may stop matching once the headings are translated. Check in-page links after rendering.
  • Keep product names and command names consistent by checking them in the result.

Not a certified translation

Machine translation, not a certified or sworn translation. If your document goes to an authority, check what it requires first.

Certified, sworn or machine translation: which one do you need?

Questions

Will my code blocks be translated?

No. Code blocks and inline code are left exactly as they are, so commands and examples still work.

Do links still work?

Yes. The visible link text is translated and the URL is kept. In-page anchors based on heading text may need updating if your site generates them from translated headings.

How much does it cost?

One credit per 500 words of prose, shown before you confirm.
