Translate the text in an image

Drop a photo or screenshot. The text is read, translated and written back onto the image, and you also get the translation as plain text.

Don't upload confidential documents on the free tier. Why?

Signs, menus, flyers, screenshots and photos of forms all carry text you might need in another language. DropTranslate reads the words in the image together with their position, translates them, covers the original text and writes the translation in its place. Because the original letters have to be painted over, the result works best on clear, flat text such as screenshots, printed notices and menus. Handwriting, curved or angled text and busy backgrounds are harder, so every image also comes with a text-only version you can read or copy.

How it works

JPG, PNG or WebP. We show the credit cost before you confirm.

Pick the language

Choose the target; the source is detected from the text in the picture.

What changes, what stays

Translated

  • Printed or typed text visible in the image

Kept as-is

  • The picture itself: photos, icons and backgrounds around the text
  • Image size

Layout: Fair: works best on clear, flat text

Screenshots, signs, menus and flyers work well. Dense pages, small print, handwriting and text on curved or patterned surfaces are less reliable; use the text-only download for those.

  • The painted-over areas use a plain background, so they can look different from a textured or photographic background.
  • Handwriting is often misread. Check anything important against the original.

Tips

  • Take the photo straight on, in good light, with the text filling most of the frame.
  • For a multi-page scanned document, a scanned PDF is easier than many separate images.

Not a certified translation

Machine translation, not a certified or sworn translation. If your document goes to an authority, check what it requires first.

Questions

Can it read handwriting?

Sometimes, but not reliably. Printed and typed text works much better. Always check handwritten parts against the original.

Will the image look the same?

The picture stays the same and the text areas are covered and rewritten. On plain backgrounds this looks clean; on photos or textures the covered patches are visible.

Can I just get the text?

Yes. Every image job includes a text-only download of the translation.
